Can you believe 2009 is nearly behind us? It's been a year of change indeed, and our old amigo El Niño may be back in town! NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) recently announced that Northern California can expect rainfall totals to be greater than 40% above normal between December and February. Although this is fantastic for our regional drought conditions, strong winters challenge roofing systems and always bring emergency repair calls.
Please take a moment to review our "Seasonal Roofing Alert" below, and call to schedule your seasonal maintenance inspection now if you haven't already done so. We are proud to be your roofing partner throughout the life of your roof and intend to help you preserve your investment.
Preserving and Protecting History at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium
Madsen Roof Company continued its string of high profile, successful public works projects with its reroof of the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium in the Summer of 2009. The Sacramento Memorial Auditorium is the city's signature building and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
A 3,867 seat multi-purpose venue, the Memorial Auditorium was built in 1926 and first opened to the public in February 1927. For over 80 years, the Memorial Auditorium has hosted countless historic events including concerts, graduations, as well as the 2006 inauguration of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Madsen's work involved the installation of a 60 mil TPA single ply system and new gutters at the main roof, repairs and the application of a coating system to the remaining roof areas and the replacement of the underlayment and broken tiles throughout the structure. This multi-phase project required the utmost care and attention to detail due to the historic significance and local importance of the Memorial Auditorium as a landmark Sacramento fixture.

The roof is one of the
building’s most valuable assets. Not only
does it protect the building, but it also safeguards
all of the vulnerable occupants and sensitive materials
within the structure. Roofs are constantly under
attack by changes in weather. Madsen recommends
that an inspection and maintenance be performed
after the fall months. Due to the high volume of
debris dispersed onto the roofs an inspection will
help detect and solve minor problems before they
become serious issues, avoiding interruptions of
the internal functions within the building, and
most importantly, protecting the owner’s
investment by adding years to the life of the roof.
A good rule-of-thumb is
to inspect and provide maintenance to your roof at
least twice a year – once in the fall and again
in the spring. To budget for roof maintenance, building
owners and property managers can refer to Madsen
Roof Company’s Estimating Roof Maintenance
Costs.
At the very least, preventative
maintenance should include:
1. Removal of obstructions including leaves dirt,
debris from roof drains an/scuppers, as well as the
field and waterways.
2. Inspecting for deflections in the roof, including
splits, blisters and exposed decking.
3. Removal of unused or vacant equipment.
Madsen
Roof Company's "Tail Gate" Safety Meetings
At Madsen Roof Company
safety is our number one priority. We have an excellent
safety record because we hold weekly safety meetings, “tail
gate” meetings at the start of every job and
spontaneous job site safety inspections by our OSHA
certified safety manager.
Ladder
safety is one of our biggest concerns as they are a
leading cause of job site injuries in the construction
industry. Here are some of the safety rules we teach
our employees to practice daily.
1.
Ladder Selection: Select
the correct type of ladder for the project or application
to be performed. 2.
Ladder Inspection: Inspect
the ladder for defects, wear and tear, and inadequate
parts. 3.
Tie Off: Tie down the
ladder top whenever possible to prevent slipping or
twisting when using an extension ladder. 4.
Ladder Placement:
Position the ladder in a place where there are the
least likely obstructions to occur, (pedestrians, cars,
vegetation). 5.
Transportation: Securely
tie down the ladder when transporting it on vehicles,
use several support points to prevent ladder sag or
shifting. 6.
Ladder Storage: Keep
ladders in good condition. Keep them clean, oil moving
parts such as spreader bars, hinges, locks or pulleys.
