Madsen Roof Company recently completed
the replacement of four walkway decks
at the California Highway Patrol
Academy in West Sacramento. Each
deck is approximately 600 square
feet and provides access to Cadet
living quarters. The existing decks
needed replacement due to years of
use and weather exposure.

Instead
of starting with
the existing surface,
the weathered concrete
decks were completely
demolished and removed.

Madsen
poured new lightweight
concrete decks, installed
two drains per deck
and integrated the
decks into the existing
stucco wall. |

applied a sixth colored
urethane coat designating
the specific paths the
cadets are required to
use as a part of their

The CHP Academy is one of the most
modern and complete law enforcement
training academies in the United
States. The Academy successfully
accommodates 280 students in dormitory
rooms designed for up to two persons
per room. There are four rooms to
a cluster, and these rooms share
a common restroom.
The CHP's consultant originally
called for the application of a urethane
coating system to the existing deck
surfaces. However, after closer inspection,
the consultant determined that the
existing surface was not adequate
for application of the urethane system.
As a result, the project took on
a whole new, much more complicated
character. Madsen Roof Company was
ready to meet the more extensive
and challenging requirements.
Instead of starting with the existing
surface, the concrete decks were
completely demolished and removed.
Madsen then poured new lightweight
concrete decks, installed two drains
per deck and integrated the decks
into the existing stucco wall. After
allowing the decks to properly cure,
Madsen applied a five-coat urethane
coating system, incorporating aggregate
in two of the coats to provide a
non-slip walk surface. Finally, Madsen
applied a sixth colored urethane
coat designating the specific paths
the cadets are required to use as
a part of their training.
The project was a complete success.
The new decks are attractive, safe
and durable. California Highway Patrol
cadets will be using them for many
years to come as the Academy trains
tomorrow's generation of law enforcement
officers.
